What Is Ise Jingu Shikinen Sengu?
The Shikinen Sengu (periodic rebuilding of the shrine) is a Shinto ritual in which the shrine buildings and sacred treasures are rebuilt every 20 years, and the deities are moved to the new locations.
The 20-year cycle was established to ensure that architectural techniques and ritual practices were passed down to the next generation, and it has been handed down for approximately 1300 years.
To convey the story in a constantly evolving yet unchanging form—that is the essence of the shrine's relocation ceremony.
